Stage 1:
The process of a commission is a relationship of communication between artist and client. Below is an example of what could be expected in the commission process and to show the detail in which I work with my client before beginning the artwork.
SteP 1 - Gathering direction and setting expectations
I work very closely with my clients from concept to finish. My goal is to include my client as much as possible in the process, gathering information, discussing colours and setting the expectations for delivering exactly what the client wants as well as being true to my own hand. It is worth saying, while I take on commissions, I create from my soul. If you are interested in a commission, I request you keep an open mind and not restrict my artistic inclination. I will do my best to create a piece that is my soul within your guidelines.
The following is an example to show that process. I was commissioned for a 3-piece series. Specifically, three landscape paintings in the style of my sketchbook drawings on paper. No larger than A3 in portrait format. They were to sit side by side as feature against the far wall of the client’s entry.
Step 2 - value studies | locking down the composition
After viewing her space and discussing expectations and specifics of content we were ready to lock in a direction and style. The content was specific, feature Pittwater and the local Northern Beaches. I sometimes will review photographs I have taken for research to help with places of inspiration. We sat a few times, and I made sure they were 100% behind the direction of Sketchbook. This was especially important as my sketches are very different from finished pieces. Once concept, content and direction were locked in, I presented value studies for approval.
In the example you can see one of my photographs and one of my value studies taken from my sketchbook. I work with many photographs to connect to a place if I do not have access to it. This place is my on my daily walk. I am extremely familiar and emotionally connected.
Step 3 - Colour Palette discussions and final product
I usually schedule another discussion or meeting to obtain more feedback and to discuss colour palette options and suggestions. Once approved, I can confidently start painting. Depending on the concept and design the painting process can take anywhere from a weekend to 6 weeks. One can’t rush creativity.
In the photo I have displayed the suggested colour palette, value study, final colour palette strip and the finished product.
Great care and active collaboration ensures the process is pleasant and pleasing for both parties. Being Transparent throughout the process means my client is happy and in love with their purchase and I find deep satisfaction in realizing their visual vision while staying true to my own creative style and nature. In other words, don’t expect me to paint a photographic image to exact detail. I will be true to my style and techniques but will incorporate your vision as much as possible.
If you are interested in a commission, Please feel free to contact me. I am more than happy to discuss the process. Do keep in mind that the process can take up to 8 weeks.
